A Russian James Bond? The New Film's Depiction of Vladimir Putin Appears to Reinforce Kremlin-Crafted Narratives

Last year, star Jude Law stated he had no concerns about backlash for playing Vladimir Putin in a new film. The movie, though, may align too neatly with the carefully constructed version circulated by Russian state media that, domestically, it functions as a compliment instead of a critique.

The Crafted Strongman

For years, the Kremlin and its entertainment industry have worked together to craft a made-to-measure persona of the president. This figure is an infallible strategist devoid of flaws, a former spy reimagined as a local 007 who consistently understands beyond what he shows.

One recent example is a television show released last fall, helmed by a pro-government filmmaker. Its main character is a fictional blue-eyed lieutenant colonel selected by fate to “save” the nation from chaos. Although the character's name Mikhail, the implication is clear: the hero must be a known figure from the secret services.

Western portrayals often end up reinforcing this same narrative rather than undercutting it. A new film inspired by a bestselling satirical novel sets out to subvert the Putin cult by presenting him as a symptom but as a symptom, shifting the narrative weight to the spin doctors surrounding him.

The Fable of the Hesitant President

In the film, the president is presented as having been chosen by powerful oligarchs to steady the country because he is “a fit former intelligence agent”. The oligarchs approach him and practically plead him to become president. His response is that he would rather govern from the shadows, seeking enduring influence.

This narrative is a key piece of state propaganda: the detached, unwilling mastermind guided by fate. Historically, none of this took place.

The Truth Behind the Selection

No one actually pleaded with Putin to take the job. The presidency was effectively a selection process with no shortage of contenders. Central to this process stood an influential oligarch from the Yeltsin era who expected to run the country in practice.

Edited images replacing Craig’s face with his appeared on city centers, feeding the growing tendency to frame him as a Russian 007.

A Diplomatic Opportunity?

With Jude Law, an star well-liked by viewers there, the authorities are likely to seize the chance to frame his casting as a minor diplomatic triumph. The film's omission of mass protests, the political rivals, or prominent activists in the story, even though it includes recent years, is a pleasant bonus for state propaganda.

Domestically, the president is often an all-powerful presence who remains unseen directly. His influence is signaled through photographs or calls “from above”. Now, he at last gets a famous actor's visage—one that may inadvertently validate the exact legends it perhaps aims to question.
