Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed usually studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The figure of positions added to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, which he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are going up, although slowly. Prices rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
