From Struggling to Imperfect – Does Anyone Want to Secure the Big Game In the Current Year?

No league promotes parity as effectively as the NFL: it's their core marketing message. But through the first ten matchups in this campaign, this is not a competition featuring uniform distribution separating contenders, pretenders, and middle-of-the-pack clubs. It’s one where the bulk of franchises appear to be fine.

Clear Picture in NFC

Within the National Football Conference, to some degree, there is some clarity. Los Angeles and Seattle (both at 7-2) appear to be the most complete teams in the NFL, and achieved overwhelming triumphs in their weekend matchups. Philadelphia at 6-2 notwithstanding their difficulties continue to possess among the most gifted lineups across the NFL, comparable to the Packers franchise (5-2-1). Detroit as well (6-3 standing), with their fluctuating form on offense and defense and have been dealing with tension on their coaching staff, have shown they're capable of dominating good teams. For each of these squads, one can readily construct a route to the final game.

AFC Playoff Chaos

Over in the AFC, championship race remains completely chaotic. Your four division leaders after ten games: Indianapolis, New England, Denver (each with 8-2 records) and the Steelers (five wins, four losses). Read that again. Not the Chiefs. No Bills inclusion. Baltimore and Cincinnati are absent. Historically strong franchises, featuring elite NFL signal-callers, display either significant personnel gaps or have suffered medical setbacks.

Competitive Balance System

From certain perspectives, this is exactly what the league wants. Yet observing this year’s four division leaders in the AFC continues to seem unusual. Areas of each team suggest title potential, but not in their entirety. If someone requested to commit to your conference championship predictions right now, would you confidently select any one of these four teams?

Team Breakdowns

Colts Situation

Starting in Indianapolis, Daniel Jones hasn't yet achieved pumpkin status. However, recent performances have caused alarm. He's reverting to turning over the ball and struggling against pressure. He was sacked seven times against the Falcons during Sunday's contest, and experienced a short sequence where he delivered a pick and lost three fumbles. This is a week after he gave away possessions five times against the Steelers.

Indianapolis' offensive unit thrived early in the season since Jones evaded the disaster plays. The running back and protection unit mean the Colts are capable of overcoming occasional setbacks, like their German performance. But Jones returning to his historically mistake-heavy play would terminate any playoff run.

New England Patriots

The Patriots feel relatively comparable. A year ago, they were a punchline. Today, they stand as the league’s happiest surprise and the most successful franchise in football following seven consecutive victories. Except for losing due to fumbles a winnable game versus the Steelers, they’d be sitting at 9–1 with the best record. In the prior year, they were old and slow. Now they’re youthful, quick and confident. Nevertheless, one cannot overlook the ease of the Patriots' matchups. They've encountered the most manageable schedule across the NFL, and flaws have still emerged. Their quarterback has taken sacks 35 times – ranking second league-wide – with several hits he absorbed on Sunday proved brutal. With continued play, those hits add up.

Denver Broncos

The Broncos hold eight wins similarly, and it still feels as if they’re holding their breath. Their quarterback has shown inconsistency, with the attack struggling, with the defense doing all the heavy lifting. Lacking competent QB performance, Denver cannot intimidate anyone in the postseason. The Chargers are also hovering within their division at 7-2, yet medical problems along their offensive line will present challenges to achieve championship contention.

Steelers Examination

Then we have the Steelers, surprisingly atop their division notwithstanding receiving a decisive loss to Los Angeles during prime time. They've been outscored overall, their defense too often disappears, and the QB's current constraints during his career phase persistently appear. They’re 5–4 and holding on, but Baltimore, with Lamar Jackson healthy again and facing easier opponents, are riding a three-game streak. We shouldn't be completely astonished that the Ravens have narrowed within a game of the Steelers, though the speed of this shift highlights deficiencies within Pittsburgh's fluctuating form. Considering the Ravens opened with a 1-5 record and still look like capable of division victory speaks volumes regarding the complete conference.

Traditional Powers

Baltimore constitutes part among three elite teams – joined by Buffalo and Kansas City – powered by their MVP quarterbacks, that would continue to generate the greatest concern for opponents if they made the playoffs. They represent undesirable playoff matchups, yet Kansas City and Buffalo persistently undermine themselves.

Bills Struggles

A week ago, Buffalo was celebrating after beating the Chiefs. On Sunday they suffered a particularly discouraging setback of the season. They didn’t just lose versus the Dolphins; they looked terrible, losing 30-13 as visitors. It was Miami’s first win against Buffalo in over three years.
