Gareth Southgate Reveals Priorities on Mentoring Young People Rather than Returning to Coaching

Gareth Southgate has made clear that he is not seeking a return to football management, explaining that it would be tough to match the higher calling he felt as the national team coach.

Southgate indicated his intention to focus his energy toward engaging young people and countering what he described as a widespread pessimistic outlook now found in the country.

Embracing Fresh Opportunities Outside of Football

During a broadcast discussion, he was prompted regarding rumors linking him with vacant management roles in the top flight and other leagues.

“My role with England was not just a job—it was a mission representing my nation,” he responded. “It will be tough to match that experience. After nearly four decades in the game, I’m now exploring new fields where I can contribute positively.”

A Passion for Role Models

Leading up to the publication of his forthcoming publication, Dear England: Lessons in Leadership, he shared that he is “very passionate” about offering guidance for the youth, applying insights from his time as head coach of the national side from 2016 and 2024, as well as his personal family life.

The leader maintains that his journey managing the squad, during which the team shifted from being widely disliked to broadly loved, holds wider relevance.

“At the beginning, there was a major gap between the team and the fans,” he noted. “People saw us as high-ego players but we were able to turn that around. I saw the power that the team had to bring people together of every community.”

Raising Children and Shaping the Next Generation

Drawing on his family life, the coach commented: “Parents strive to offer their children a great beginning, but eventually, kids tune out. My household is no different, but I’m convinced this is a vital focus for society.”

He went on: “There’s a negative narrative around our country at the moment and we’ve got to give young people hope, we’ve got to give them guidance. We’ve got incredible talent but we need to them to find the right role models, the right friendship groups because those decisions have such a big impact on the rest of their lives.”

Unity Over Conflict

The former manager insisted that “what brings the nation together outweighs what pulls it apart” but that the cultural focus often emphasizes division.

“It’s understandable why people are disaffected,” he stated. “Financial struggles affect numerous communities, fueling calls for transformation. Yet, I’ve observed the capacity to bring the nation together. During the pandemic, I witnessed neighbors helping each other—that’s when the UK excels, demonstrating strength and unity in adversity.”

Southgate’s new release, titled Dear England, is set to provide further insights on guidance and country pride inspired by his distinguished time in football.
