Gavin Newsom States He Is Considering a 2028 Presidential Run

The California governor, a well-known Democratic figure, has disclosed that he plans to determine whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 following the 2026 elections are over.

"Absolutely, I couldn't be truthful if I denied it," the governor stated when asked about seriously considering a presidential run after the 2026 elections. "I'd just be lying. And I won't do that."

The governor's current term as California's leader wraps up in early 2027, and he cannot run again. But, he noted that any decision is still years away.

"The future will decide," he added.

Growing Prominence as a Trump Critic

The California governor has emerged as a prominent opponent of the current federal leadership, using his social media accounts and advocating for a ballot measure that would expand Democratic representation in Congress in response to redistricting by Republicans. This move has made him a target from adversaries.

Controversy Over Funds

The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, alleged that Newsom does not care about Californians in a Sunday interview on Fox News. Duffy disclosed a strategy to pull government money from California and warned suspending the power to provide commercial driver's licenses.

"I plan to withdraw a significant sum from California," he said, following a recent deadly accident in the state involving an non-citizen semi truck driver that caused three deaths and four injuries.

Newsom's office highlighted that the national authorities had renewed the individual's authorization on several occasions, which enabled him to receive a commercial driver's license under U.S. law.

Duffy had before announced he was withholding $40 million from the state for not enforcing linguistic standards for truck drivers.

Firm Rebuttal from the Administration

"Ex-reality TV personality, now cabinet member, fails to grasp federal law," the governor's team retorted in a recent release addressing Duffy's threats. "Meanwhile, unlike this clown, we focus on reality: California truck drivers had a death rate much lower than the countrywide rate. Texas – the single state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate almost 50% higher than the state. Facts don't lie. The federal leadership misleads."

Voter Sentiment and Campaign Considerations

A recent study revealed that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and almost half of voters indicated that the governor ought to campaign for the White House in the next election cycle. In recent years, public support for the governor has increased to an average of 33.5% from approximately 30%, while his negative ratings has dropped from an average of more than 40% to under 40%.

Some time ago, the governor remarked while traveling several swing states that he had "no idea" about his intentions for 2028.

He also referenced his personal struggles, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the young age of five.

"The idea that a person who got 960 on his SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was typically not at the front – the fact that this is even suggested is, by itself, amazing," he commented. "It's anyone's guess? I am eager to see who presents themselves in 2028 and who answers the call. And that's the question for the voters."
