Larian Studios Details Its Use of Machine Learning for Next Project

The studio behind popular RPGs like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin just shown its upcoming project, sparking immense hype within the player base. However, follow-up remarks from the company's figurehead have brought nuance to the narrative, touching on the studio's philosophy toward machine learning.

A Tool for Ideation, Not Replacement

In a latest statement, Swen Vincke explained that the developer is using machine learning for specific preliminary tasks. These include enhancing presentation materials, producing early-stage concept art, and drafting temporary dialogue.

Notably, Vincke stressed that the final material in the game will be crafted solely by real artists. "Larian is developing every line in-house," he affirmed.

Our studio is continuously increasing our roster of concept artists and are busily forming narrative groups.

As concept art is being particularly referenced — we currently have twenty-three concept artists and have roles to fill for additional artists.

Everything we do is additive and designed to enabling creatives to spend more time on the creative process.

Any machine learning application applied correctly is a boost to a developer's workflow, not a substitute for their craft.

Addressing Concerns and Clarifying the Vision

The admission of AI usage originally provoked unease among some the fanbase. In response, Vincke issued more elaboration on online platforms.

"We use these tools to gather inspiration, just like we use the internet and art books," he stated. "In the initial ideation stages we use it as a simple sketch for layout which we then replace with hand-crafted illustrations."

He added, "Larian brings on talent for their creative vision, not for their willingness to execute what a machine suggests."

Focused Uses for Machine Learning

Vincke had previously broken down the team's focused method to this technology, defining its use into key functions:

  • Automation of Tedious Tasks: Areas like refining animations, audio processing, and Larian-specific work like retargeting animations.
  • Fast-Tracked Experimentation: Using technology to speedily create basic versions of mechanics to test concepts before complete development.
  • Future Potential for Gameplay: Researching how AI could in the future facilitate new forms of player agency, specifically in simulating unforeseen permutations in a vast role-playing world.

He clearly noted that central narrative areas — including visual art — are are in no way departments where the team is replacing human involvement. On the contrary, Larian is recruiting more in these very positions.

"Larian is neither launching a game with machine-made assets, and we are certainly not planning on cutting teams to swap them out with AI," Vincke summarized.
