Mikel Arteta Acknowledges Long-Term Stay Is Tied to Lifting Trophies.

As he approaches his half-decade plus one year at the helm, Mikel Arteta has stated plainly that his continued role with the club is directly connected to achieving success.

The Journey So Far: The Arteta Era

The former Arsenal captain was appointed on December 20th, 2019 and soon guided the team to an FA Cup triumph within months. However, that early success is still his lone significant piece of silverware after taking over from Unai Emery.

“Absolutely,” Arteta responded upon being asked about remaining in charge after his current deal. “However, it is about today. And numerous factors have to happen in the next few months as well to earn the right.”

He will mark the anniversary with a match versus Everton, the very same club Arsenal faced immediately following his appointment was announced.

League Position and Pressure

Given that second-placed Manchester City playing against West Ham on Saturday afternoon, Arsenal face being knocked off top spot in the Premier League for the first time. This situation arises even with Arteta presiding over a squad that has been plagued by more than a century of fitness issues since the start of last season.

He currently has a year and a half left on the deal he signed in 2024, yet understands fully that he must deliver sooner rather than later.

Survival in the Job

The manager expanded, highlighting the ongoing need to prove his worth. “I think a manager has to earn the right to be here tomorrow. And that’s how how you react, how you address the media, how you step into the dressing room, the message you convey.”

He stated further, expressing gratitude for the unwavering support from the board and owners, yet identifying the team's buy-in as paramount. “Ultimately, the most important ones are those players... Over this half-decade, I’ve seen just players with a level of attention, hunger for knowledge and give the maximum to the team.”

Squad Setbacks

The team faces the weekend fixture dealing with an additional absence. Defender Ben White has been ruled out with a muscle problem that is anticipated to sideline him for the coming weeks.

A Different Club

Despite the fitness woes and the high-stakes environment, Arteta is confident the club's “objectives and communication” are completely changed from when he began his reign.

He pointed to the record-breaking achievements as evidence of progress. “You look at the performances, all the records that we... were breaking... We still have yet to do that [win trophies]. But that tells you the caliber we've reached.”

He finished by saying, “This is a standard that the Premier League has not seen before in the past. And our ambition is to achieve even higher goals. And if we do that, I think we are on the proper course to winning.”
