New York City Mayor Eric Adams Plans to Back Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayoral Race

New York City Mayor Eric Adams declared his decision to endorse former Governor Cuomo in the upcoming election for mayor, despite months of public tension between the pair of Democrats.

An Unexpected Turnaround After Previous Accusations

Just last month, the mayor had publicly condemned the former governor, labeling him a ā€œdeceptive figure and a untruthful personā€ and accusing him of having ā€œa career of pushing Black candidates out of races.ā€ Nonetheless, in a new development, Mayor Adams made a U-turn, announcing he now plans to support the former governor in areas where he maintains significant backing.

ā€œIt is crucial to mobilize the Black and brown communities that have suffered from urban displacement on how important this race is,ā€ the mayor stated.

The mayor further explained, ā€œThey have watched their housing costs rise in terms of neighborhood changes and they have been ignored in those neighborhoods, and I’m going to go to those neighborhoods and speak one on one with community leaders and groups and I’m going to walk with the governor in those areas and get them engaged.ā€

Election Landscape and Recent Events

The election battle has so far been shaped by the contest between Cuomo and progressive candidate Zohran Mamdani, whose increasing popularity has drawn interest globally and symbolized hopes for a revitalized leftwing of the Democratic party.

In a latest mayoral debate, both the democratic socialist and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa stated they would decline Adams’s endorsement if offered.

Earlier this year, Adams had begun his bid for another term as an independent after being indicted on federal corruption charges which were later dismissed in exchange for his assistance with federal immigration raids across the city.

At an separate media briefing on Thursday, the mayor responded to reporters inquiring into the support announcement by saying, ā€œI’ll be with Andrew later today.ā€

The announcement followed a day after the two politicians were seen sitting courtside together at the New York Knicks’ first game at the famous arena, which occurred immediately following a heated mayoral debate.
