‘Oh How We Will Miss This Man’: Meg Ryan Publishes Heartfelt Homage to Director Rob Reiner

The actress Meg Ryan has shared a moving homage to the departed director Rob Reiner, who was her director in the hit romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally.

A Heartbreaking Event

Reiner was discovered deceased alongside his spouse, Michele Singer Reiner, at their Los Angeles home at the weekend.

“We will miss this man so deeply…” Ryan wrote on Instagram, alongside a picture of them together. “Thank you, Rob and Michelle [sic], for the way you believe in true love, in fairy tales, and in laughter. Thank you for your faith in the best in people, and for your profound love of our country.”

Legal Proceedings Unfold

Reiner’s son Nick, 32, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and made a court appearance today. He’s being detained without the option of bail. Sources state that Reiner’s daughter Romy found her father’s body.

“I have to believe that their story will not end with this impossible tragedy, that some good may come, some awareness raised,” Ryan went on to write. “Perhaps they would desire a legacy of hope and humanity, leading us toward empathy and tranquility.”

A Statement from Siblings

Reiner’s surviving children Jake and Romy shared a statement today. “Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day,” they said. “The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience. They were more than parents; they were our closest confidants.”

Peers Pay Their Respects

Ryan’s co-star, Billy Crystal, similarly honored Reiner via comments shared yesterday together with remarks by Larry David, Martin Short and Albert Brooks.

“His comedic touch was beyond compare, his love of getting the music of the dialogue just right, and his sharpening of the edge of a drama was simply elegant,” it read. “He cherished performers and improved scribes. His finest trait was granting creative liberty. He valued input and made you part of the team. Collaborators felt like a unified team. Being guided by him was an honor, yet just one facet of his impact.”

An Enduring Filmography

When Harry Met Sally was a box office and critical triumph in 1989, making over $93m at the box office and earning Nora Ephron an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay.

Rob Reiner was introduced to Michele Singer Reiner whilst filming When Harry Met Sally. The pair were connected through Barry Sonnenfeld, a friend and director.

Reiner’s extensive filmography comprised classics such as Misery, Stand by Me and The Princess Bride. The director and his wife were married for 36 years.
