A renowned South African radio and club DJ has been fatally gunned down in the country's largest city Johannesburg, sending shockwaves across a nation battling entrenched crime.
Warrick Stock, who went by the name DJ Warras, was attacked in the central business district on the afternoon of Tuesday.
Police said the forty-year-old presenter was confronted by three suspects, with one opened fire on him before escaping on foot.
The reason of the attack remains unclear and no one has been arrested have taken place, police said.
Authorities revealed that Stock was ambushed as he was departing from a location close to the Carlton Centre.
He had spent several hours at the property managing the setup of safety equipment, which had been reportedly taken over by squatters, according to reports.
"It is alleged the deceased was confronted by three unknown suspects after he parked his car, and they opened fire at him before fleeing the scene on foot," a police statement stated.
Surveillance tape reportedly captured a man with dreadlocks and dressed in what resembled a guard's attire firing shots on Stock before making his escape.
The DJ sought to escape after he was hit but succumbed to his injuries across the street.
It was further revealed that Stock had an gun that was not fired and no items were stolen during the assault.
Crucial forensic evidence, like bullet casings, were found at the scene.
Officials are asking members of the public who may have have information to contact them.
"Evidence suggests they covered significant ground after the attack, and investigators have been following their trail to determine their whereabouts," stated a police chief.
His sister, a close relative, said the family was struggling to come to terms with the loss.
"I am in shock. I am shattered," she said.
"We know he was a champion for numerous individuals. He spoke out bravely about issues not many people were willing to speak about. This is a devastating blow."
She urged the public to avoid sharing disturbing footage from the incident, explaining this was an incredibly difficult time, particularly for Stock's children.
Stock was the host of Ngicel' iVisa, a reality show that was broadcast on a popular local broadcasting platform.
Beyond his media career, Stock was engaged in various commercial activities, including security provision, offering elite guarding services and securing prestigious gatherings across South Africa.
He was also reportedly involved in property management and assisted with tenant removals.
His death has shocked the country and prompted an outpouring of tributes from his fans, the authorities and various organizations.
A government minister remarked he was outraged and heartbroken by Stock's killing.
"He expressed his views fearlessly and impartially. He even challenged me and my policies as a minister. He was a pure example of who we must aspire to be," he stated.
