Teacher Killed and 25 Female Students Kidnapped in Armed Clash at School in Nigeria

Armed conflict at learning center
Educational institutions in the northern part of Nigeria have repeatedly come under attack for militant organizations

Gun-wielding individuals have fatally shot an educator and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an assault against a educational institution for young women in the northwestern part of Nigeria, according to police.

The armed faction invaded the comprehensive secondary school for girls in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at approximately 04:00 local time on the beginning of the work week, authorities reported.

The armed individuals "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a firefight" before breaching the school's outer barrier and seizing the students from their living quarters, an official report indicated.

An educational worker was fatally shot while defending the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now undergoing medical care.

Observers recounted a large group of attackers, referred to locally as criminal elements, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to cause panic.

Area inhabitants informed journalists that the gunmen subsequently marched a group of female students into surrounding rural areas.

The police said they had deployed "extra specialized police forces, together with army members and vigilante groups" to the area.

A coordinated search and rescue operation is underway in surrounding forests and potential getaway paths.

In recent years, educational institutions in Nigeria's north have increasingly been targeted for weapon-carrying factions, who frequently execute kidnappings to request monetary settlements or secure advantages in discussions with officials.

The incident in Kebbi State underscores the continuing safety emergency afflicting the area, resulting in households in Maga in a situation of anxious fatigue as they anticipate and pray for their daughters' safe return.

Protection challenge in the northern regions of Nigeria has intensified significantly in the last several months, with educational institutions bearing the brunt of the violence.
