Tetris Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

Whenever a major honors show nears, you'll find a clamor for introducing fresh award types to recognize unsung work and satisfy the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition for anything in 2014
  • Another creative title missed out in 2019
  • Popular arranging title got ignored recently
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're small games, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators function at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
