Alright, how was the past year in your family? Could it be described as entirely positive as people post on online? Full of top marks for your offspring and wild dress-up birthday parties for the parents? Maybe it felt like a ocean of frustration with only rare entertaining flotsam? Is any of this authentic, or are we all digitally altered AI slop beings with unrealistic dental work?
I've corralled the family together, whether they wanted to or not, to reflect on the paramount thing in twelve months: what titles we played the most. Without further ado:
Horizon Zero Dawn
"Is it impossible to pick just one?"
"This isn't my personal ranking."
In the mobile realm, she’s been playing Cityscapes and "trying to find decent healthcare."
"Virtually?"
"In real life."
Overwatch
"I don’t play games on my phone." He seemed insulted that I suggested it. Point taken.
Resident Evil Biohazard
She is trying to get into drama school, but when she took a break from vocals, she was immersed in Resident Evil. She also spoke at length in great detail about her achievements on The Sims, where her character has a successful utopia with infinitely better healthcare than her older sibling has in real life.
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She began the year at sixty percent completion and ended it at 82%. It’s a marathon not a sprint for her. On her phone: something called Woodle, where you have to unscrew pins.
Minecraft
Every time I see my adult son playing Minecraft, I give him a hard time like a cross between a relentless heckler. When he objects, I reply that I am behaving this way to build character so he can grow up and play games for grownups. It’s a very Scottish father/son relationship.
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
She was the clear winner for this one. She is a machine. Superior than I was at Dancing Stage MegaMix in my prime.
Marvel Snap
No other game compared to the hours I spent on this remarkably well-crafted deck building competitive game, with its constantly evolving range of cards and game variations.
Marvel Snap
The catch about games that frequently update their range is you wake up one day and understand it is all just an attempt to suck you into fear-of-missing-out driven microtransactions. So enjoyment soured halfway through the year and it went into the bin.
Doom: The Dark Ages
Excellent reinvention of a classic franchise. Captivating atmosphere from the off. I wish I could eviscerate my issues so effectively in real life.
Blue Prince
I'm unwilling to rush this gorgeous, distinctive game and I just didn’t have the time or headspace to give it what it needed earlier this year. With family visits over the festive period, I aim to experience this in the early morning after appropriate hospitality.
Balatro
I know Balatro was the previous year's sleeper hit, but I was slow on the uptake. And it is exceptional. It just gets every single thing right. Crazy Poker is a fantastic concept, but the effects behind the different wild cards are so inventive it has become a game I could play any time. Combine that with the charm of the card design, and this is an true pinnacle of gaming. I dream of being stuck in a small space for hours just so I have an opportunity but play it.
Outer Worlds 2
I endured a bit of backlash when I wrote about how a glitch in another game ruined the experience for me, but that other title is still a massive gaming achievement in terms of overall polish – which I valued even more after playing Outer Worlds 2. So my appreciation goes out to the commenter who took the time to send a message to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "poorly reasoned". I present that as written, because I appreciate the effort, and they are obviously an astute judge of character.
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Fine. Give me a brutally difficult exploration-focused thing and provide little guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "explore". Great fun. I acknowledge that it is beautiful and is perfection if you are into challenging games, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I desire less in my mid-fifties. I was around back when all games were like this, and I’ve had enough. It was fine when I was a kid, but so was many outdated things.
Toss-up between corporate partnerships that caused concern, and expensive game releases. Both ethically dubious and concerning.
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all be unique names called from the doorstep at tea time.
Right Thumb Joint. Honestly. I don’t know if it’s because of console gaming or doomscrolling, but it aches like hellfire in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs insured back in the past.
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to make 2026 last until the cows come home.
The Witcher 4.
