The Eurovision Song Contest Used to Be a Whimsical Delight – Yet It Has Become a Calculated Tool to Sanitize Conflict.

An new initialism came to light a few months after the start of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it means “Injured child with no living relatives”. This term is unique to Gaza, according to doctors including child health specialists. Typically, it is unusual for physicians to treat a child who has been bereaved of their entire family. However, there has been no semblance of normality about the widespread destruction in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been wiped out and the number of children who have lost limbs exceeds that of any other region in the world. No sense of normalcy about many doctors coming back from a landscape of rubble with testimonies of children being intentionally shot at.

An Unimaginable Crisis Regardless of a Reported Truce

Conditions in Gaza persist as an utter catastrophe. Critical healthcare resources are failing to reach those in need, and international watchdogs assert that violations are ongoing. Authorities disputes these accusations, consistent with how it disavows each claim it is charged with. Meanwhile, while grieving children who lost parents are now freezing in temporary shelters, there is a piece of uplifting information: nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from advancing its declared purpose of “unity and artistic sharing.” Organizers will continue to roll out a welcoming platform for Israel, although several European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Since this, it seems, is what international harmony resembles.

Eurovision, of course prohibited Russia from competing in 2022 due to the “grave situation in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza is entirely distinct.

A Selective Vision

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was alleged to have used unfair vote practices last year in what could be seen as an bid to manipulate Eurovision. Forget the fact that a three-year-old girl was reportedly killed in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Forget the fact that aggression from Israeli settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Forget the fact that international journalists are still prevented from freely reporting in Gaza. All of this, apparently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds Amidst Unimaginable Suffering

The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – almost double the current lifespan of an individual in Gaza at present. The show may go on, but it will never be able to restore the whimsical pleasure it was formerly known for. An institution that was originally built on peace has now become a transparent instrument to whitewash war.
