The Golden State is Completely Drought-Free for the First Time in a Quarter Century.

Following 25 long years, every region of California is experiencing drought conditions. This landmark event comes on the heels of difficult years marked by insufficient rainfall that intensified wildfire risks and challenged its huge agribusiness.

An Update Shows No Drought

A recent update from the U.S. Drought Monitor illustrated that California in its entirety is clear of drought or abnormal dryness. This shift was driven by multiple heavy precipitation that helped fill key lakes like Oroville and Shasta exceeding their typical levels.

“To those aged 25 and below you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been in or emerging from drought,” stated a weather expert.

From Intense Storms to Rainy Seasons

The path to this point included severe and lethal winter storms that struck the state in the not-too-distant past, resulting in widespread flooding, blackouts, and tragic losses. Even though those events started to mitigate the drought, they did not eliminate it.

Until late December, pockets like northeastern California were still classified as unusually parched. Heavy rains at the start of the new year finally erased those remaining dry spots.

A Crucial Snowpack Is Below Average

But, experts warn that drought-free conditions should not be confused with having no water worries. Recent measurements of the Sierra Nevada snowpack place it at approximately 70 percent of the typical level.

This frozen reservoir, which accounts for approximately 30% of the state's water supply as it runs off, is a key piece for the year ahead. Hydrology managers have emphasized that it is premature to draw conclusions for the months ahead.

“The current pattern right now is increased rainfall over snowfall,” commented a California water official. “Our hope is for the snow accumulation to improve by the start of April so that we’re closer to average.”

While the drought map shows a clean slate, the focus now shifts to maintaining this hard-won hydrological health during the rest of the year.
