James understood his historic streak of reaching double digits was in danger. When it mattered most, however, it was not his focus.
The right decision involved passing the basketball – which is exactly what he did. Consequently, the unprecedented record finished.
LeBron's unprecedented streak of 1,297 consecutive regular-season double-digit scoring performances ended during a recent game, as the league's career points king was limited to eight total points during the Los Angeles Lakers' 123-120 triumph versus Toronto. He made the game-winning assist, finding teammate Rui Hachimura to hit a three-pointer to win the game.
“Nothing,” James said when asked on the record concluding. “The important thing is we won.”
He might have attempted to win the contest – and extended his record – on the final possession, yet he opted to make the extra pass to Rui in the left corner. Hachimura sank it, and James exulted immediately.
You have to play the game the proper way. You always make the correct play,” James remarked. That is my philosophy. That’s how I was taught the game. I’ve done that my whole career.”
He is acutely aware exactly how many points he has during a game,” commented the team's head coach the coach. He acted just as he has so many times.”
LeBron checked back into the game for the final time at just over five minutes left, the win along with the historic run both hanging in the balance. He had only six points on a 3-for-15 performance then.
He managed a basket with 1:46 left to level the contest but then missed a 14-footer at 1:01 left that might have taken him into double figures.
He avoided taking another shot – even though he had a chance. Austin Reaves gave James the ball with a few seconds left, however, James decided to make the extra pass instead of shooting.
The basketball deities, if you approach it correctly, they often bless you,” Redick added.
James's streak commenced over eighteen years ago. It was, by far the longest such streak the league has ever seen: Michael Jordan had 866 consecutive double-digit scoring games, Kareem recorded 787, and Karl Malone recorded at 575.
LeBron is such an unselfish player,” noted teammate Jake LaRavia.
He simply plays hoops. He had the opportunity but because of the player he is and his character as an individual, he made the unselfish play, dished to Hachimura and secured the victory.”
Scoring in double figures had typically been a guarantee well before the start of fourth quarters. Throughout his run, he had reached ten points by the beginning of the final quarter on the vast majority of occasions prior to Thursday.
However, two such single-digit games after three periods had happened recently: He had nine points entering the final quarter versus the Mavericks on 28 November, followed by six before the fourth quarter versus the Suns on Monday night.
LeBron was able to keep the streak alive in the Phoenix game. The very next outing, it concluded – yet he was celebrating all the same.
“I always just make the right play. That comes naturally, win, lose or draw,” James affirmed. When you make the right play, the basketball gods forever rewarding me.”
