During the fall season, the late-night programming block saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the channel launched a fresh animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, evoking a animated take of a serene talk show. In an era often defined by dark humor, this show's earnestness struck a chord and helped it become a breakout hit.
In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two more seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who found the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming style.
"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about watching this lovable family go about their simple existence.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to evolve comedy past its long-running sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to bask in the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
