Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that these practices become not financially viable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
