NYC's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion, departing from the rent-stabilised apartment that sparked debate throughout his election bid.

A Historic Residence

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the primary dwelling for most New York City mayors since the World War II era.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a central policy, did not confirm this decision promptly following his victory in November.

"My choice was based on the security of my family and the need to dedicating my complete efforts on implementing the affordability agenda New Yorkers elected me on," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.

Leaving Astoria

His home was in Astoria, Queens, a community renowned for its diverse immigrant communities and international dining.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for demonstrating what is great about New York City," he noted.

"Even though I'm moving in the neighborhood, Astoria will continue to reside within me and my efforts as mayor," he added.

Campaign Controversy

Throughout his race for mayor, Mamdani linked his central policy – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.

However his critics, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the apartment despite the fact that he came from a well-known family.

A House Not Always Used

Some mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, kept his residence in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side during his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a place for public city functions, and championed significant upgrades of the aging mansion.

A Grand New Home

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings very different than his modest Astoria home.

Adorned in cream-colored walls, forest green window covers, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home situated by the East River.

Internally, the first floor of the classically designed mansion is furnished to reflect the home's early 19th-century origins.

The property, which reportedly has several bedrooms, also boasts fortified protections to protect the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

A number of people have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors would sometimes open and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "No matter the skeptics say," he insisted in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

The apartment he is leaving is under rent control, meaning the city imposes caps on how much property owners can hike the monthly cost each year.

New Yorkers see such units as essential protections as the cost of housing rises faster than the means of many residents.

Records showed Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the average rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
